Tucson shooter Jared Loughner has been indicted on 49 counts in connection with the January shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords that left the congresswoman injured and six others — including a 9-year-old and a federal judge — dead.
Loughner already faced three federal counts — one for the congresswoman and two for her aides — but 46 new counts were added on the theory that the Safeway where Giffords was meeting with her constituents was, at the moment, protected federal ground.
The additional 46 counts include each person either fatally shot or wounded by Loughner as well as those in attendance at the “Congress on your Corner” event during the shooting who were not wounded.
